When choosing an air purification system, there are choices between a filter less system, or one requiring an air purifier filter. There are benefits and disadvantages to both types of systems. You must know how to maintain your air purifier filter if this is the type of system that you choose.
Air purifier filters vary in effectiveness, and you must carefully check the specifications of each filter type before purchasing. Most air purifier filters last anywhere between one and five years, the later being the most common. HEPA filters and activated carbon or some combination of the two is very common types of filters that are used for air purification systems.

When a carbon activated filter needs to be replaced you will likely smell an unpleasant odor emanating from the system.
